How to charge an EV without an assigned space
This is the hardest situation in EV charging, and the honest answer is that home charging may not be possible yet. You still have workable options, and some of them are close to as convenient.
Your options, roughly from most to least convenient
- Shared chargers where you live. In a condo or apartment with open parking, the association or landlord can install shared chargers that residents pay to use. A request from several residents carries far more weight than one. See what boards consider.
- Charging at work. If your employer offers it, workplace charging during the day can replace home charging entirely.
- A Level 2 station near home. Some neighborhoods have public Level 2 chargers where an overnight or several-hour session fits your routine.
- Weekly DC fast charging. One 20 to 40 minute stop a week covers many drivers. It costs more per mile than home charging.
- Curbside programs. Some cities and utilities install chargers on streetlights or at the curb. Check your city and utility.
Before you buy the car
Write down where you would actually charge on a normal week, and what it would cost. If the plan depends on a public charger that is often busy, look for a second option. Choose your charging guide to read the path that matches where you live and park.

Can I own an EV without home charging?
Yes, many drivers rely on workplace charging, nearby public Level 2 stations or a weekly DC fast-charging stop. It takes more planning and usually costs more per mile than charging at home.
How do I get my condo to install shared EV chargers?
Gather interest from other owners, then ask the board to study building electrical capacity and adopt a charging policy. A group request with a clear cost-recovery plan is much more likely to move forward.
